Meltwater flux from northern ice-sheets to the mediterranean during MIS 12

چکیده

Planktonic foraminifer oxygen isotopes through MIS 12 were analysed from Ocean Drilling Program Site 977 in the Alboran Sea. After correction of sea surface temperature (SST) effect on δ18O composition foraminiferal calcite, resulting seawater (δ18Ow) was used to reconstruct variations δ18Ow Atlantic inflow into Mediterranean. A synchronous record KC01B core, Ionian Sea, evaluate changes isotope gradient within Mediterranean due hydrological during 12. Instead glacial enrichment expected for Mediterranean, lower values than today have been observed both and seas, especially between 455 ka end (424 ka). These negative anomalies must caused by a flux freshwater Although largest fraction entered inflow, Heinrich stadials, allowed us identify other sources eastern basin. One these probably meltwater generated at southern margin Fennoscandian ice-sheet that via Caspian Black seas. However, proximity core Adriatic Sea points delivered Alpine transported Po river as main cause 18O depletions.

Plastic bed beneath Hofsjökull Ice Cap, central Iceland, and the sensitivity of ice flow to surface meltwater flux

The mechanical properties of glacier beds play a fundamental role in regulating the sensitivity of glaciers to environmental forcing across a wide range of timescales. Glaciers are commonly underlain by deformable till whose mechanical properties and influence on ice flow are not well understood but are critical for reliable projections of future glacier states. Using synoptic-scale observation...

Sensitivity of Northern Hemispheric continental ice sheets to tropical SST during deglaciation

[1] A thermomechanical ice sheet model (ISM) is used to investigate the sensitivity of the Laurentide and Fennoscandian ice sheets to tropical sea surface temperature (SST) perturbations during deglaciation. The ISM is driven by surface temperature and precipitation fields from three different atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs). For each AGCM, the responses in temperature and precip...

Extra-long interglacial in Northern Hemisphere during MISs 15-13 arising from limited extent of Arctic ice sheets in glacial MIS 14

Knowledge of the behavior of Northern Hemisphere (NH) ice sheets over the past million years is crucial for understanding the role of orbitally driven insolation changes on glacial/interglacial cycles. Here, based on the demonstrable link between changes in Chinese loess grain-size and NH ice-sheet extent, we use loess grain-size records to confirm that northern ice-sheets were restricted durin...

Climatic conditions for modelling the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets throughout the ice age cycle

The ice sheet-climate interaction as well as the climatic response to orbital parameters and atmospheric CO 2 content are examined in order to drive an ice sheet model throughout an ice age cycle. Feedback processes between ice sheet and atmosphere are analyzed by numerical experiments using a high resolution General Circulation 5 Model (GCM) under different conditions at the Last Glacial Maxim...
